Something exceptionnal in the world of festivals happened in Houston Texas where Hunter Todd wrapped his 50th edition of the festival. He is by far the longest running festival Director in the World. (Worth a guiness book entry as well as a few toats of champagne, which we all had with him)

50 years celebrating the best in indie filmmaking descovering screen legends and icon directors such as Lucas Spielberg, Ang Lee and many others. He received vibrant homages and applause and family emotions when his daughter hande him a trophy and the Omega 'MoonWatch' Speedmaster 50th Anniversary Limited Series watch.

Roger Corman could not make it but sent him this very nice video which deeply touched Hunter.

2017 GRAND REMI WINNERS

WorldFest-Houston is the only film festival in the world with ten major competition categories, not just Shorts and Features like most festivals. In addition, we have more than 200 sub-categories, so a small Indie documentary does not have to compete with a National Geographic Special. Each year, we receive more than 4,500 category entries, and only about 15% of total entries actually win a Remi Award. WorldFest is the only film festival in the world that actually grades/scores your entry. We do not believe in awarding just one Gold, Silver & Bronze, as it is impossible to pick just three winners with so many wonderful entries. Since we did give first honors to Steven Spielberg, George Lucas, Ang Lee, John Lee Hancock, Randal Kleiser and the Coen Brothers, the winners of this year could well become the Spielbergs or Ang Lees of tomorrow. We present only one Grand Remi Award to the top winner in each of the major ten categories. The Remi Award is named after Frederic Remington, who’s brilliant sculptures and paintings captured the spirit of Texas and the West. WorldFest 51 Opens for entries on August 15th, 2017.

This was a total disaster for the Houston area!

We have never seen such a wonderful outpouring of community/people support for the tens of thousands of victims of Hurricane Harvey.

First responders, including Police, Texas National Guard, US Coast Guard and literally thousands of people with their own boats!

They were out even at the height of the storm, bringing people out of their flooded homes, in fishing boats, kayaks, canoes and airboats!

#HoustonStrong

Thousands of Houstonians have lost their homes, cars, offices and jobs, and the death toll is now predicted to go over 50 people.

We are very happy to say that our offices and homes of all members of Team WorldFest are safe and dry. It will take weeks, months and perhaps even years to fully recover from this incredible disaster, now listed as the most expensive natural disaster in US History. Thankfully, the death toll is relatively low.

The 51st WorldFest has already received a record number of international entries to-date, and we expect it to break last year's record number of entries! Our offices are up and running, power and A/C is full and fine, and our website has never gone down.

We do want to personally thank the hundreds of friends of WorldFest all over the world, who have checked in to see how we were all doing. We had no flooding in our homes and apartments, though the flood came within 500 feet. Our offices are totally high and dry, though we did close for a few days to wait out the storm. We did have lots of food, red wine and Gin & Tonics, so all went well!

Please do consider helping the victims of this terrible disaster. Our team has very carefully researched all the charities via Guidestar, and we do recommend the following charities for your support - they are all on the ground in the Houston area and helping Now:

Samaritan's Purse

Team Rubicon

PetSmart Charities

The Capon

This marvelous bird is a result of too much government control! Back in Ancient Roman times, the Roman Senate was concerned about the people having too many feasts and having too good a time. So, they outlawed fatted Chickens! A very clever Surgeon managed to 'de-sex' the Rooster, resulting in a super fat, tender and delicious "Capon" - The "Soprano Chicken" that is far more tender and tasty than a regular chicken or a turkey. Plus the Capon is a lot smaller, which helps! So the people got around the Senate ban of Chickens for their feasts, only to create something better - The Capon. A good final result from government meddling!

The Smithfield Ham

The traditional slow cured Smithfield Ham is always part of our holidays at the Todd House. Back in the 1700's, one of my ancestors, Capt Mallory Todd traded goods from Virginia to the Caribbean Islands. The ham industry in Smithfield goes back to Colonial Times when Capt. Mallory Todd, a merchantman from Bermuda, set up shop in town and began exporting hams as early as 1779. Capt. Todd is credited with the creation of the Smithfield ham with his distinct salt and smoke cured country hams. In exchange for Todds Old Virginia Hams, he brought in fine Rum and other Caribbean products. Todd's business was very successful and his first packing house was built in 1880. It is now the Smithfield Company, a Fortune 200, built on Hams!

             51st WORLDFEST-HOUSTON “CALL FOR ENTRIES!”

“FORGET SUNDANCE! …WorldFest is one of the best conceived festival productions on the planet!” ~ Craig Outhier, film critic, Phoenix press; Tempe Times.

The 51st Annual WorldFest-Houston International Film Festival continues its totally dedicated Independent Film screening format for the upcoming April 20-29, 2018…! WorldFest will screen just 80-90 feature film premieres, with a total and absolute emphasis on the American and International Independent feature films and a continuing annual spotlight on award-winning short films and documentary films.

Entry forms & complete entry information are on our website (www.worldfest.org) – Click on Enter Film Festival, check the FAQ, Categories, Entry Form… The Main Entry Deadline is Friday, Dec. 15th 2017 – A Mail-By Ship-By Deadline! Entries do not have to arrive by this deadline.  Now you can also enter with Feature, Shorts, & Documentary submissions via our great online partner Film Freeway  https://filmfreeway.com/

WorldFest Artistic and Program Director, Kathleen Haney, stated, “We are fiercely dedicated to the Indie Feature and Short Film and look for a quality selection of individual films to maintain a smaller, yet effective program rather than an overly large and unwieldy slate of 150-300 films. Haney continued, “At WorldFest we use the mantra‘A good story, well told’ as our time-tested approach to film selection”. (For complete winner info from the past WorldFests, go to – https://www.worldfest.org – click on the Winners tab.)

Ridley Scott commented “WorldFest is in the business of validating excellence!” after he received the Grand Remi Award in 1985 for his famous 1984 Apple TV commercial. The mission of WorldFest is to recognize and validate creative excellence in film & video production in every facet and category of filmmaking. Many filmmakers report that a Remi Award from WorldFest helps them doors to advance their film careers.

WorldFest proudly presents two ongoing Panoramas each year; The 13th Annual Panorama Italia co-sponsored by The Italian Cultural Institute and The Italian Consulate and also the Fourth Annual Panorama China, a major, comprehensive survey of modern Chinese cinema, both independent & major studio films from China. WorldFest will also continue the annual Short Film Showcase, a special review of more than 100 new and award winning short and student films...from the festival that gave first top honors to Spielberg, Lucas, The Coen Brothers, Ridley Scott, Robert Rodriguez, Spike Lee, Gavin Hood, John Lee Hancock, Michael Cimino, Steven Poster, Oliver Stone, Ang Lee, Atom Egoyan and David Lynch, among many others! Few other festivals have such a “discovery” track record. WorldFest has emerged as the oldest continuous film festival management in the world with the same executive director, J. Hunter Todd serving for 50 consecutive years. A few other festivals are older, but they have had as many as ten different directors. WorldFest is the oldest film festival in The South.

WorldFest began in August 1961, as an International Film Society. It began screening Independent, foreign & art films. It became an officially competitive International Film Festival seven years later, in April 1968, and has been in continuous operation since. It is one of the original three film festivals in North America, with San Francisco and New York as the first two events. Following WorldFest was Chicago, Cleveland, Dallas, and Seattle. Then Sundance and SXSW, Toronto and Tribeca. Now there are more than 3,000 USA film festivals of various types, levels and quality, most being simply non-competitive screening events! WorldFest is international, competitive and invites filmmakers worldwide. WorldFest has emerged as the oldest, longest running Independent Film Festival in the whole wide world!

The 51st Annual WorldFest offers International Competition in; Features, Shorts, TV production, TV commercials, unproduced Screenplays & Teleplays, Experimental, Student, Documentary, Business & Industry, New Media, and Music Videos. WorldFest is the largest film & video competition in the world, in sheer number of actual category entries, with more than 4,300 category entries received in 2017. There are almost 200 sub-categories for competition, allowing each film to compete in its own individual genre.

WorldFest-Houston is sponsored by the State of Texas, the City of Houston, Lopez Negrete Communications, Eastman Kodak, the Texas Film Commission, Boxer Properties, Arcodoro Ristorante, Masterpiece International, The Universal Film & Festival Organization (UFFO) Cottonwood Financial, the Brown Foundation, InkTip and Avis/Budget and the Houston Arts Alliance (HAA).

WorldFest was founded over 50 years ago as an International Film Society in August, 1961. WorldFest became the third competitive international film festival in North America, following San Francisco and New York. WorldFest is the oldest Independent Film & Video Festival in the World. It evolved into a competitive International Film Festival in April, 1968. It was founded by award-winning producer/director Hunter Todd to present a quality film festival for the Independent filmmakers. Hunter Todd has been honored with more than 115 international awards for creative excellence in film production, and he has been the producer, director, writer and/or cameraman on more than 300 motion picture and video productions. The mission/vision statement of WorldFest is to recognize and honor outstanding creative excellence in film & video, to validate brilliant abilities and to promote cultural tourism for Houston, to develop film production in the region and to add to the rich cultural fabric of the city of Houston. All members of the WorldFest staff are filmmakers.

WorldFest-Houston International Film Festival (now it’s 50th year!) continues with its totally dedicated Independent Film screening format for the upcoming April 21-30, 2017 unspooling at the flagship AMC Studio 30 Dunvale Theaters. WorldFest will screen just 55-60 feature film premieres, with a complete and absolute emphasis on the American and International Independent feature films and with a continuing annual spotlight on an individual country and its films. WorldFest also offers competition in TV Production, Documentary, Corporate & Business Films, Student & Experimental, TV Commercials, Film & Video Production, Music Videos, New Media (Interactive, Web Sites & 3D Productions), Screenplays, Print and Radio.

The late, great Chuck Jones, with his wife Marian, Kathleen Haney and Hunter Todd.

The late, great Chuck Jones, with his wife Marian, Kathleen Haney and Hunter Todd.

WorldFest is one of the oldest and largest film & video competitions in the world, with more than 4,500 category entries received from 37 countries in 2006. Actually WorldFest is 12 Major film & video competitions in one event, unlike Cannes, Sundance and Toronto, which are just 2 competitions for shorts and features only. Because of our 12 major competitions and the 200+ sub-categories, WorldFest does give a lot of awards, but they are both earned and deserved. No awards are given in any category unless the scores from the juries are high enough to place for honors. Overall only 15-20% of the total category entries actually win an award at WorldFest. However, everyone attending the Grand Awards Gala wins an award, as we only invite the actual winners, which makes for a delightful and enjoyable evening, since there are no disappointed “nominees” that do not win anything. Those that do not win an award are informed by email or letters prior to the festival.

WorldFest Artistic and Program Director Kathleen Haney stated, “We feel that it is impossible to properly emphasize individual films when the festival screening schedule is too large. We must consider both our festival audience and our independent filmmakers. A huge slate of 150-300 films cannot possibly do justice to each individual film. Further, it is impossible to see more than 50-60 films (with four shows a day) in a ten-day festival, so it is foolish to program more than that.” Haney continued, “We will concentrate on only the very best, selecting new American & Foreign Independent films that truly deserve a premiere at WorldFest. By doing so, we can concentrate on the films and their filmmakers and enable our faithful audience the opportunity to see each and every film!” All 35mm films and Digital entries are screened at the AMC Studio 30 Dunvale Theatre, 2949 Dunvale Road, WorldFest – the Indie Film Festival for the New Millennium!
