(If you win a Remi, you may be screened on big AMC 60-foot screens to 600+ theater audience!! So we need a BluRay or Jump Drive for the DCP screening! Therefore WorldFest requires a Premiere of some level, World, USA, South West! If your entry if it has been all over, we reserve those screening slots for true Premieres, but you could still win a Remi Award.
Script Winners receive an InkTip Script Listing: A listing of your script on InkTip so that producers and reps can find you.

WorldFest was founded over 50 years ago as Cinema Arts, an International Film Society in August, 1961. WorldFest became the third competitive international film festival in North America, following San Francisco and New York. WorldFest is the oldest Independent Film & Video Festival in the World. It evolved into a competitive International Film Festival in April, 1968. It was founded by award-winning producer/director Hunter Todd to present a quality film festival for the Independent filmmakers. Hunter Todd has been honored with more than 115 international awards for creative excellence in film production, and he has been the producer, director, writer and/or cameraman on more than 300 motion picture and video productions. He has served as the member of the International Jury on more than 25 world-wide film festivals, from Italy, France, Spain, Portugal, Greece, Croatia, Korea, Ireland and Bulgaria. The mission/vision statement of WorldFest is ~ To recognize and honor outstanding creative excellence in film & video, to validate brilliant abilities and to promote cultural tourism for Houston, to develop film production in the region and to add to the rich cultural fabric of the city of Houston. All members of the WorldFest staff are filmmakers.

WorldFest is one of the oldest and largest film & video competitions in the world, with more than 4,500 category entries received from 74 nations in 2016. Actually WorldFest is 10 Major film & video competitions in one event, unlike Cannes, Sundance and Toronto, which are just 2 competitions for shorts and features only.

You may enter Shorts, Features, Student Films, Experimental Films, Screenplays, Music Videos and New Media via the wonderful FilmFreeway platform. However, if you want to enter the Television & Cable Categories (100 Series), the TV Commercial Categories (400 Series) and the Film & Video Categories (200 Series) (Many specialized TV, Documentary and Corporate/Business Categories, simply visit our main website at https://worldfest.org - click to Enter, then click on Enter Film Festival! You may also printout an Old School Paper entry form and send it in with your entries! Welcome to the 50th Annual WorldFest-Houston International Film & Video Festival!

WorldFest Artistic and Program Director Kathleen Haney stated, “We feel that it is impossible to properly emphasize individual films when the festival screening schedule is too large. We must consider both our festival audience and our independent filmmakers. A huge slate of 150-300 films cannot possibly do justice to each individual film. Further, it is impossible to see more than 50-60 films (with four shows a day) in a ten-day festival, so it is foolish to program more than that.” Haney continued, “We will concentrate on only the very best, selecting new American & Foreign Independent films that truly deserve a premiere at WorldFest. By doing so, we can concentrate on the films and their filmmakers and enable our faithful audience the opportunity to see each and every film!” All films/Digital entries are screened at the AMC Studio 30 Dunvale Theatre. WorldFest – the Indie Film Festival for the New Millennium!

In addition to honoring a different country each year, WorldFest will continue with its annual Short Film Showcase, a special review of 100+ new short and student films…from the festival that discovered Steven Spielberg, George Lucas, Ang Lee, John Lee Hancock, Randall Kleiser, Ridley Scott, Robert Rodriguez, Robert Townsend, The Coen Brothers, Spike Lee, Oliver Stone and David Lynch with their very first awards. WorldFest has emerged as the oldest film festival management in the world, with the same continuous director for more than 50 consecutive years. A few other festivals are older, but they have had as many as ten different directors. WorldFest is uniquely the only film festival in North America that is staffed and managed totally by filmmakers. All staff members have active film and video production experience, which gives them a very unique point of reference in relation to the entering filmmakers and their work. WorldFest, founded in 1961, is the oldest Independent film festival in the world, and the 3rd oldest film festival in North America.

Among the remarkable number of WorldFest discoveries, we include just a few, listed in alphabetical order: John Alvidson, John Badham, Ralph Bakshi, Carroll Ballard, John Boorman, Marty Brest, Michael Cimino, The Coen Brothers, Bryan De Palma, Jonathan Demme, Michael Demme, Atom Egoyan, John Frankenheimer, Leslie Linka Glatter, Charles Guggenheim, John Lee Hancock, Hal Hartley, Randall Kleiser, Ang Lee, Spike Lee, George Lucas, David Lynch, Paul Mazursky, Steve Poster, Robert Rodriguez, John Sayles, Ridley Scott, Steven Spielberg, Oliver Stone, Robert Townsend, Will Vinton, Peter Weir, Hugh Wilson and hundreds more. The winners this year will be the Spielbergs of tomorrow and you can meet them before they are famous. WorldFest-Houston…”Fiercely Independent” WorldFest is one of the oldest film festivals in the world, founded in 1961 as a film society.

Awards & Prizes

Because of our 12 major competitions and the 200+ sub-categories, WorldFest does present a lot of awards, but they are both earned and deserved. No awards are given in any category unless the scores from the juries are high enough to place for honors. Overall only 15-20% of the total category entries actually win an award at WorldFest. However, everyone attending the Grand Awards Gala wins an award, because we only invite the actual winners, which makes for a delightful and very enjoyable evening, since there are no disappointed “nominees” that do not win anything. Those that do not win an award are informed by mail with personal letters prior to the festival. (For Shorts over 15 Minutes, please scroll down to LONG SHORTS to enter. We accept shorts to 69:59 Minutes, after that we consider them to be Featurettes).

Rules & Terms

WE ACCEPT FILMFREEWAY STREAMING ENTRIES, PLUS VIMEO & YOUTUBE, DD/BR & JUMP DRIVES! BUT IF YOU WIN A REMI AWARD, WE DO REQUIRE A BLURAY, USB FLASH DRIVE FOR THEATER SCREENING OF YOUR ENTRY! WE JUDGE ON 110" LG HI-RES DIGITAL FLAT SCREENS AND WE SCREEN WINNERS ON BIG AMC THEATER SCREENS, WITH BIG JURIES - NOT ON LITTLE LAPTOPS BY INTERNS!

All filmmakers understand and accept that if their film is accepted for presentation and screening at the film/video festival, they grant full and unrestricted permission for HIFF, Inc. to screen the film/video at times of the festivals choice and to charge an admission fee for the presentation of the digital video program. All the presented film/videos do win a Remi Award from the festival (HIFF). WorldFest only screens winners.

The Filmmaker understands and accepts that they do not participate in receiving any funds from the Box-office proceeds which are fully retained by the festival to help cover the overall cost of the festival presentation. It should be noted for the record that box-office proceeds never cover the cost of presentation of the Features and Short Film Programs. The Festival (HIFF) is a non-profit, 501-C-3 Educational/Cultural Organization with Federal, State, County & City Tax-Exemptions.

Required Legal Stuff: The filmmaker releases the festival (HIFF) from any and all liability for damages or destruction of the entered DVD/BluRay/Jump Drive/DCP. The Filmmaker understands that the entered DVD or BluRay will be retained in a secure facility by the festival, and every effort will be taken to protect and control the viewing of this production. The festival assumes no liability whatsoever for theft, copyright violations or piracy of the entry.

The Filmmaker accepts and understands that the festival, in conjunction with AMC Studio 30 Dunvale will do everything possible to present the video in the best possible manner but the festival (HIFF) is not responsible for any and all malfunctions during the presentation of the production at its festival screening. We use Professional Pioneer BluRay/DVD International playback systems, all formats, all regions, including Region 0. All entries are carefully pre-screened prior to the public showing to assure that the BluRay/DVD does perform to industry Standards. The Festival (HIFF) assumes no responsibility for any technical difficulties in the presentation of this video at the actual event.

The Film Festival (HIFF) reserves the complete right to make changes in the program dates and times and to possibly not screen the video, despite it’s being selected for screening.

The filmmaker will endeavor to present to The Festival (HIFF) a new and pre-checked BluRay/ DVD / Thumb Drive for the actual presentation of the video at the festival.

You may send just one DVD/BluRay for multiple category entries. You may combine multiple TV commercial entries on a DVD, with no color bars, no automatic looping feature to begin again and a 5 second break between spots. Make sure their titles and order/sequence are correct on the DVD. Screenplays must be properly bound in some way, and can be optioned but not currently produced, and there is no limit to the number of screenplays that can be entered. DVD Entries can be NTSC, PAL, or SECAM, – any and all regions. There is no extra charge for PAL or other formats. We accept all regions and all formats. We also accept Thumb Drive and Blu-Ray discs, any region.

A short paragraph, 50-100 word synopsis, is required for all scripts and all entries (except TV commercials, music videos), which is for the jury and if selected, for the program book. Shorts and features are to provide (when selected into program) a color or B/W production digital still photo (resolution of 300 Dots per square inch DPI or higher, higher is much better) for the program book jpeg photo files are OK. (Photos not required for video, cable, TV commercials, website entries, or screenplay entries). If accepted, feature entries should also send several production still photos of a high resolution (300 DPI or better), a press kit, and short CV (resume) with photo of the director(s).

Special note for script entries: A Synopsis needs to accompany the script. You may ID the script with title, your name & contact details, and your WorldFest entry ID. Scripts must be bound in some way! We do prefer scripts to be printed in Courier 12pt – 14pt if at all possible. We will not accept loose pages in a box. Unproduced scripts only, please, and no digital files. Our judges like to hold the script in their hands and feel the paper!

Roger Corman's tribute to Hunter Todd 50th festival edition

Something exceptionnal in the world of festivals happened in Houston Texas where Hunter Todd wrapped his 50th edition of the festival. He is by far the longest running festival Director in the World. (Worth a guiness book entry as well as a few toats of champagne, which we all had with him)

50 years celebrating the best in indie filmmaking descovering screen legends and icon directors such as Lucas Spielberg, Ang Lee and many others. He received vibrant homages and applause and family emotions when his daughter hande him a trophy and the Omega 'MoonWatch' Speedmaster 50th Anniversary Limited Series watch.

Roger Corman could not make it but sent him this very nice video which deeply touched Hunter.

2017 GRAND REMI WINNERS

WorldFest-Houston is the only film festival in the world with ten major competition categories, not just Shorts and Features like most festivals. In addition, we have more than 200 sub-categories, so a small Indie documentary does not have to compete with a National Geographic Special. Each year, we receive more than 4,500 category entries, and only about 15% of total entries actually win a Remi Award. WorldFest is the only film festival in the world that actually grades/scores your entry. We do not believe in awarding just one Gold, Silver & Bronze, as it is impossible to pick just three winners with so many wonderful entries. Since we did give first honors to Steven Spielberg, George Lucas, Ang Lee, John Lee Hancock, Randal Kleiser and the Coen Brothers, the winners of this year could well become the Spielbergs or Ang Lees of tomorrow. We present only one Grand Remi Award to the top winner in each of the major ten categories. The Remi Award is named after Frederic Remington, who’s brilliant sculptures and paintings captured the spirit of Texas and the West. WorldFest 51 Opens for entries on August 15th, 2017.

This was a total disaster for the Houston area!

We have never seen such a wonderful outpouring of community/people support for the tens of thousands of victims of Hurricane Harvey.

First responders, including Police, Texas National Guard, US Coast Guard and literally thousands of people with their own boats!

They were out even at the height of the storm, bringing people out of their flooded homes, in fishing boats, kayaks, canoes and airboats!

#HoustonStrong

Thousands of Houstonians have lost their homes, cars, offices and jobs, and the death toll is now predicted to go over 50 people.

We are very happy to say that our offices and homes of all members of Team WorldFest are safe and dry. It will take weeks, months and perhaps even years to fully recover from this incredible disaster, now listed as the most expensive natural disaster in US History. Thankfully, the death toll is relatively low.

The 51st WorldFest has already received a record number of international entries to-date, and we expect it to break last year's record number of entries! Our offices are up and running, power and A/C is full and fine, and our website has never gone down.

We do want to personally thank the hundreds of friends of WorldFest all over the world, who have checked in to see how we were all doing. We had no flooding in our homes and apartments, though the flood came within 500 feet. Our offices are totally high and dry, though we did close for a few days to wait out the storm. We did have lots of food, red wine and Gin & Tonics, so all went well!

Please do consider helping the victims of this terrible disaster. Our team has very carefully researched all the charities via Guidestar, and we do recommend the following charities for your support - they are all on the ground in the Houston area and helping Now:

Samaritan's Purse

Team Rubicon

PetSmart Charities

The Capon

This marvelous bird is a result of too much government control! Back in Ancient Roman times, the Roman Senate was concerned about the people having too many feasts and having too good a time. So, they outlawed fatted Chickens! A very clever Surgeon managed to 'de-sex' the Rooster, resulting in a super fat, tender and delicious "Capon" - The "Soprano Chicken" that is far more tender and tasty than a regular chicken or a turkey. Plus the Capon is a lot smaller, which helps! So the people got around the Senate ban of Chickens for their feasts, only to create something better - The Capon. A good final result from government meddling!

The Smithfield Ham

The traditional slow cured Smithfield Ham is always part of our holidays at the Todd House. Back in the 1700's, one of my ancestors, Capt Mallory Todd traded goods from Virginia to the Caribbean Islands. The ham industry in Smithfield goes back to Colonial Times when Capt. Mallory Todd, a merchantman from Bermuda, set up shop in town and began exporting hams as early as 1779. Capt. Todd is credited with the creation of the Smithfield ham with his distinct salt and smoke cured country hams. In exchange for Todds Old Virginia Hams, he brought in fine Rum and other Caribbean products. Todd's business was very successful and his first packing house was built in 1880. It is now the Smithfield Company, a Fortune 200, built on Hams!

WorldFest-Houston, the third longest-running International Film Festival in North America, celebrated the conclusion of its 10-day run of film, fun and fanfare in its 50th annual independent film showcase with a 9% increase in box-office!  With Rob Reiner on hand to kick off the festival with his brilliant new film, LBJ, WorldFest got off to an awesome start.

Rob Reiner received his well-deserved WorldFest Remi Career Achievement Award for his long and brilliant career. WorldFest continued on a strong course of 17 World Premieres, several full houses and concluded with Yoshinari Nishikori’s Tatara Samurai to a full house of delighted Houston Indie film fans and Eugene Nomura, Producer of this epic film for the grand finale.
WorldFest celebrated its Twelfth annual Panorama Italia in collaboration with Valeria Rumori, Director of the Italian Cultural Institute in Los Angeles, CA (IIC) and the Italian Consul Elena Sgarbi in Houston, featuring director Gianfranco Cabbidu attending for his film The Stuff of Dreams (La Stoffa dei Sogni) plus five other independently produced Italian language films. The Third Annual Panorama China concluded with Special Encounter, a delightful comedy directed by Mina Kwan and produced by Wanda Corp., Beijing, China. Closing weekend festivities, April 29 & 30th, included a Grand Awards Gala on Saturday night that culminated with a Sunday morning VIP NASA Rocket Park whirlwind tour and WorldFest Consular Regatta & BBQ hosted by The Houston Yacht Club. All WorldFest events are open to the public.

WorldFest, founded as an International Film Society in August 1961, became the third competitive international film festival in North America, following San Francisco and New York.  WorldFest evolved into a competitive International Film Festival in April 1968 and has a long list of “discovered” film greats such as Steven Spielberg, George Lucas, David Lynch, Ridley Scott, Oliver Stone, Atom Egoyan, Randal Kleiser, Ang Lee, Robert Rodriguez, the Coen Brothers, Francis Ford Coppola, John Lee Hancock and many others from their beginning efforts for film submissions early in their careers.  Multi award-winning producer/director, Hunter Todd, founded this special film festival to honor all categories of film and video production continuing his long dedication of “Discovery,” spotlighting emerging Independent filmmakers who become “the Spielbergs & Ang Lees of tomorrow.”
WorldFest’s mission is to recognize and honor outstanding creative excellence in film & video, validate brilliant abilities and promote future filmmaking in Texas as well as enhance cultural tourism for Houston and its environs.  The 10-day festival ran to a strong finish with several sold-out screenings, one of which was the compelling documentary, Plant Codes: Unleashing Nature’s Healing Power  - directed by Gary Null.  WorldFest celebrated independently produced cinema from 74 Nations all over the globe with 87 Indie feature productions, 109 award winning shorts and over 800 USA and International filmmakers attending; despite current economic challenges.

All film premieres screened at the Flagship AMC Studio 30 Theatres, a 13 year WorldFest-Houston Cinema partner. Other major VIP Partner/Sponsors include Action Limo, Boxer Property, Westchase Marriott Hotel, City of Houston, State of Texas, Houston Arts Alliance, Avis/Budget Car Rental, FilmFestivals.com, FilmFreeway.com, The Houston Yacht Club & Celebrity Cruises.

WorldFest is delighted to continue its special association with Lopez Negrete Communications, the largest Hispanic Ad Agency in the USA who are the creative genius behind the WorldFest graphics. Loris & Efisio Faris, owners of Arcodoro Ristorante - continue their great support of Panorama Italia now in its twelfth year.

A brief video tribute by Roger Corman set the tone for the evening at the 50th Annual WorldFest Remi Awards Gala, Saturday April 29th at The HQ Westchase Marriott Hotel, VIP partner & official host hotel.  Festivities began with a cocktail reception at 7pm. Pastorini Bosby Talent provided the lovely award presenters.

Dance entertainment was courtesy of Nelly Fraga’s Ambassador Intl. Folkloric Dance Company, then a medley of Chinese performers and a grand finale by Shawn Welling’s Planet Funk Academy’s lead dancers performing a specially choreographed high-energy dance mix.

On April 27th, 28th, & 29th, WorldFest conducted Nine Film Industry Master/Class Seminars featuring Finance, Acting, NASA footage use, Docs, SAG/AFTRA special sessions and concluding with the Indie Forum of WorldFest feature film Directors.
