The Capon

This marvelous bird is a result of too much government control! Back in Ancient Roman times, the Roman Senate was concerned about the people having too many feasts and having too good a time. So, they outlawed fatted Chickens! But a very clever Surgeon managed to 'de-sex' the Rooster, resulting in a super fat, tender and delicious "Capon" - The "Soprano Chicken" that is far more tender and tasty than a regular chicken or a turkey. Plus the Capon is a lot smaller, which helps! So the people got around the Senate ban of Chickens for their feasts, only to create something better - The Capon. A good final result from government meddling!

The Smithfield Ham

The traditional slow cured Smithfield Ham is always part of our holidays at the Todd House. Back in the 1700's, one of my ancestors, Capt. Mallory Todd traded goods from Virginia to the Caribbean Islands. The ham industry in Smithfield goes back to Colonial Times when Capt. Mallory Todd, a merchantman from Bermuda, set up shop in town and began exporting hams as early as 1779. Capt. Todd is credited with the creation of the Smithfield ham with his distinct salt, sugar and smoke-cured country hams. In exchange for Todd's Old Virginia Hams, he brought in fine Rum and other Caribbean products. Todd's business was very successful and his first packing house was built in 1880. It is now the Smithfield Company, a Fortune 200, built on Hams!

Dear Friends,

As we put the finishing touches on our exciting 53rd Houston International Festival program, we want to reach out to inform you of the steps we are taking in light of the evolving status of COVID-19. HIFF staff continue to monitor on a daily basis the developments and latest guidelines provided by local, national, and international authorities and at this time we are confident and comfortable in moving forward with the Festival, which will run April 17–26.

We remain committed to making the best decisions possible for the health and well-being of our attendees and will continue to take proactive measures to ensure public health during our Festival. Don't worry, friends... as long as humans have been around there has been a need for story telling. The show will go on and we will be back with more "good stories, well told."

Now, y'all stay safe, ya hear!

Dear film creators and lovers,

Friends, we really didn't want it to come to this. We kept quietly pressing on, putting the finishing touches on our program, watching amazing films and assembling the best 53rd WorldFest-Houston International Film Festival that we could. But, Houston is asking us to protect our community and, so, we must cancel the events on April 17 - 26, 2020.

As we say in this biz, "the show must go on!" And it will go on, but not exactly as we had planned. We hope to reschedule WorldFest-Houston 53 later in the Summer!

There are so many unknowns, but we do know that our juries still want to share these incredible projects with the world and we will continue our mission to validate cinematic excellence.

We are working with our juries to complete their screenings in the next two weeks and we will announce and inform all Remi Winners! We will know more about what we will do about the Premiere Film Screenings as the future reveals itself over the next few weeks.

We do pledge to keep you informed and we pledge to keep doing our part to promote the creators of independent film, our amazing city of Houston and the diverse cultures of the world.

If you have questions, please reach out to us. We will have more answers soon! We hope to provide screening opportunities to our selected filmmakers when normalcy has returned.

Thank you for your support! And thank you for sharing your passion with us - remember that in times of chaos, sharing good stories is an elixir of life.

We will return with more "good stories, well told" from around the world!

With hope,

Team WorldFest-Houston International Film Festival

WorldFest grants a posthumous Lifetime Achievement Remi Award to Brian Dennehy

WorldFest is honored to grant a posthumous Lifetime Achievement Remi Award to Brian Dennehy for his long and talented career in motion pictures. In one of his final roles as Del, an aging Korean War Vet in Driveways (USA) directed by Andrew Ahn, he warmly depicts his unexpected friendship (at times gruff but still caring) with a lonely 8 year old boy, Cody, (Lucas Jaye, our own Rising Star Actor 2020), who moves in next door with his single Mom (Hong Chau). Driveways is a heartwarming story which had been selected to be the Official Closing Night Film of WorldFest 2020. Brian Dennehy knew of the WorldFest Lifetime Achievement Award and was hoping to be able to travel and personally accept it, however, it was not to be.

Brian Manion Dennehy (July 9, 1938 – April 15, 2020) was an American actor of stage, television, and film. Dennehy won two Tony Awards, an Olivier Award, and a Golden Globe, and received six Primetime Emmy Award nominations. He had roles in over 180 films and in many television and stage productions. His film roles included Gorky Park (1983), Silverado (1985), Cocoon (1985), F/X (1986), Presumed Innocent (1990), Romeo + Juliet (1996), and Knight of Cups (2015). Dennehy won the Golden Globe Award for Best Actor in a Miniseries or Television Film for his role as Willy Loman in the television film Death of a Salesman (2000).

According to Variety, Dennehy was "perhaps the foremost living interpreter" of playwright Eugene O'Neill’s works on stage and screen. He had a decades long relationship with Chicago's Goodman Theatre where much of his O'Neill work originated. He also regularly played Canada's Stratford Festival, especially in works by William Shakespeare and Samuel Beckett. He once gave credit for his award-winning performances to the play's authors: "When you walk with giants, you learn how to take bigger steps." Dennehy was inducted into the American Theater Hall of Fame in 2010.

WorldFest history: WorldFest, founded as an International Film Society in August 1961, became the third competitive international film festival in North America, following San Francisco and New York.  WorldFest evolved into a competitive International Film Festival in April 1968 and has a long list of “discovered” film greats such as Steven Spielberg, George Lucas, David Lynch, Ridley Scott, Oliver Stone, Atom Egoyan, Randal Kleiser, Ang Lee, Robert Rodriguez, the Coen Brothers, John Lee Hancock, Randal Kleiser, Francis Ford Coppola and many others from their beginning efforts for film submissions early in their careers.  Multi award-winning producer/director, Hunter Todd, founded this film festival to honor all categories of film and video production continuing his long dedication of “Discovery,” spotlighting emerging Independent filmmakers as “the Spielbergs & Ang Lees of tomorrow.”

WorldFest’s mission is to recognize and honor outstanding creative excellence in film & video, validate brilliant abilities and promote future filmmaking in Texas as well as enhance cultural tourism for Houston and environs.
There were more than 4,500 category entries in all film and video categories; only 12-15% of submitted entries placed for WorldFest Remi awards.

The WorldFest Remi Award is named for the brilliant artist, Frederic Remington, who captured the Spirit of Texas and the West with his remarkable paintings and sculptures.

We wanted to give you a progress report on WorldFest 54! We are running slightly behind due to the Covid19 pandemic!
We hope to complete all jury sessions in the next ten days!
Because of Covid19 restrictions, we have had to cut back the 54th WorldFest-Houston to just 3 1/2 days, but we are premiering 39 new Feature films and around 90 Intl shorts. Remarkably, actual entry totals were UP this year, despite Covid19! This did mean a greater burden on our Intl Juries, however. The USA was first in total entries, then - surprisingly, China was second and then Canadian entries! A total of 76 nations entered! The most in our 54-year history!
We will not be able to have our traditional Remi Awards Dinner due to the Covid19 restrictions. Our Cinemark Theatre is also following Covid19 restrictions, limiting seating to 50%, which means some films can only have 50 viewers! We do have very special rates at our HQ Westin Hotel, near the Cinemark Theatre. We will be sending all filmmakers selected for screening the special hotel discount code! We will announce all Remi Winners on April 22nd, online and in a jpeg file! We will then begin sending all Remi Winners their Remi Awards! Of course, you may order Duplicate Awards for your associates on our website!
We are publishing an Official 54th WorldFest-Houston color program book, which we will send to all Remi Winners that are Selected for Screening! It will also be Online on our website for all the world to see! Last festival, we had more than one million Intl viewers of the program book!
All our best wishes in these very difficult Covid19 Times!

Stay Safe!

The fantastic team behind each Worldfest Houston festival for quite some time!  Hunter Todd founded the festival in 1961 and has run each of the 53 editions so far, that makes him the only festival organizer in the world with such a vast experience in running festivals.

Behind each great man you will always find a great woman: here both Kathleen and Katy Lea have proven essential to the success of the festival.

Check our ambiance video : this is what the festival looks like (FUN) when ther is no pandemic around: sheer celebration of indie talent.

This year the festival will run April 16-25, 2021 ina tighter mode, without the traditionnal 5 course gala diner.
